Manber Jeffries House is an intricate, single
storey, rear and side extension to the ground floor flat of a substantial, semi-detached,
Victorian villa in Willesden Green, London.
The project reworks a small area of the existing ground floor of the property and also provides
a new kitchen and dining room extension that
simultaneously operates as a vaulted garden room for the home.
The roof lines of the extension fall with the
internal circulation requirements, allowing the extension to manage the transition from the high
level of the existing property’s ground floor to the
lower level of the garden beyond. The extension is also designed to fall in height, to match and
relate to the steep pitch of an existing lean-to construction, which had previously contained a
very small kitchen.
Key to the project was the retention and
extension of a substantial brick party wall that had historically supported a symmetrical pair of
pitched garden outbuildings and lavatories. These were already semi-demolished, and had been
heavily neglected in recent decades. Victorian
glasshouses and ancillary garden buildings, built as appendages to the boundary walls of formal
gardens, formed a particularly strong inspiration for both the formal language and the materiality
of the project.
Budgetary constraints demanded that an
extreme rigour be applied to an informed use of standardised building components to form two
contrasting skins that externally and internally
line an ambitious structural steel framing configuration. Although heavily interdependent,
the openings of the red outer façade slide past the structural steelwork behind when they
directly interface with either the host property
or the party wall. Demolition of the host property was purposefully kept to a minimum.
The exposed steelwork supports a complex roof geometry, and cantilevers in two directions to
form an elaborate tectonic to the forming of
openings to the garden beyond. A focus on detail, and a deliberate honesty and celebration of stark,
layered construction is employed throughout.

	Architects’ Journal Small Projects 2020 Shortlisted

Set within the double-pitched attic space of a late 19th century warehouse on the
Farringdon Road, Studio Represent is a new workspace for the recruitment agency Represent. Designed and
delivered by architects James Alder and Thom Brisco, then practising as Alder Brisco, the works encompass
the strip out, refurbishment, and retrofit of the warehouse’s 1000 sqft third floor plate.

Conceived as an internal streetscape, the programme was distributed into individual clusters of vaulted rooms that took inspiration from the industrial heritage of the host building.


 
In
addition to the spruce plywood volumes of the space, two large, slotted and dowelled, plywood and linoleum work desks were designed by the architects and fabricated by Timber
Workshop.

CREER HOUSE




	

	







	The project’s brief was to reconfigure the ground floor and to extend their end of
terrace, interwar home in Isleworth, to create a light-filled and spatially generous
extension that overtly connected the house to the significantly lower level of
the rear garden. A full width kitchen and dining space open up what was the
previously congested ground floor of the house. 

Designed and
delivered by architects James Alder and Thom Brisco, the stepped massing of the
extension responds to the surrounding properties, while a terracing throughout
the depth of the plan also makes a virtue of the property’s change in levels.



Fletton bricks, common to the housing stock of the area form
the main material of both the interior and the exterior expression, while flush
concrete lintels and copings are left exposed throughout. Notched timber joists
and a plywood deck complete the stepped soffit of the scheme.



Given the financial constraints of the project, an economy
of means was pushed as far as possible through the use of standardised building
components throughout. These were purposely utilised, with maximum off the
shelf lintel spans being used to maximise both the volume of the extension and
the scale of the rear opening to the garden for example. Overlapping lintels
and stacked masonry inform the structural logic of the project and are left
wholly exposed both inside and out. 



The stacking of bricks also goes on to form a shallow
staircase from the already sunken level of the extension to the lower level of
the rear garden. This full width brickwork terracing also includes for a number
of planters, a boundary wall, and a rear garden gate.

RICHARDSON HOUSE




	

	
	Richardson House is an complex internal renovation and a single storey rear
extension, to a mid-terrace, three storey townhouse in SW London.
The project extensively reworks the interior of the existing house, and updates much of the
pre-existing fabric. The extension greatly enlarges the available living spaces, and opens up the ground floor to both the front and to the rear of the existing property.


White brick and concrete lintels create a strong material aesthetic to the proposal, and link
into the language of the mid-century tectonics of the existing townhouse. Proportional cues
for the interventions are driven by those employed in the ordered construction of these row
houses.

TABBERNER COOK HOUSE




	

	
	Tabberner Cook House is a very large, split-level ground floor extension to a home in Crystal Palace, London. The existing property is on a street-facing corner plot and sits across a very steep site with long views out across the south of London. 



Planning Permission for the scheme was granted in the summer of 2022, and the project began construction on site in the summer of 2023. The project was completed in December of 2024.



The stepped massing of the project, and its scope more generally, is informed by an ambitious domestic programme for a split-level, ground floor extension of this type. Internally, a new kitchen, dining space and sunken lounge are the primary living spaces of the scheme. Additionally, a series of flexible auxiliary spaces have also been built as part of the project internally, these include, an internal greenhouse and potting shed, a small bike workshop, a utility space and pantry, and a new WC. All of these spaces extend outward and downward to the terraced garden and landscaping beyond. 



The exposed corner site and its heavily sloped condition, allows for the play of multiple stepped levels, both inside and out. Many of these level changes are defined by numerous planters, that similarly play a role in integrating the garden with the wider scope of the project.



Key to the project, is its direct relationship to both the existing garden beyond, and to the forming of flexible internal spaces dedicated to horticulture. The project seeks to merge and extend the practice of horticulture in and out of more typically domestic environments. Internally, the potting room has a very direct and purposeful relationship with the sunken living spaces beyond, controlling the passage of heat and air around the ground floor through a pair of bespoke oak-framed internal windows that can be set to a number of configurations. These in turn have a series of adaptable shelving areas and timber surfaces behind that can be reconfigured to the changing needs of the occupants. 



In addition, very large areas of the southwest-facing façade are also openable, to allow for variations in use. This allows for the whole of the ground floor extension, depending upon its desired function, to act more broadly as a greenhouse throughout, giving the inhabitants the choice as to how much of the interior space is given over to horticulture or not. 



Externally, the project also provides for a large new terrace, and a significant area of stepped landscaping that terminates with the construction of a large, street-facing, stepped boundary wall. The boundary wall is formed from an English bond of stepped white brick, with whitened timber above, that manages the steep level changes of the corner site’s street-facing boundary, while providing a level of privacy to the internal spaces of the proposal beyond. The strict setting-out mirrors the careful pacing of the shallow brickwork steps behind, and the deep chamfered window bays internally. A natural zinc cladding wraps the higher facades and terminates the parapets through extended bespoke drip details, with enlarged hoppers and downpipes. The natural zinc, formed bespokely on site, will slowly patina in time forming a subtle, varied texture to the upper facades of the project. 



All of the external windows and doors, with the exception of those that directly exit to the new terrace, are detailed as a complex, stepped curtain wall construction. Very high-level glazing forms the two sides of the sunken area of the extension as they meet with the corner of the existing house. These windows are key to the project, and allow for natural light to enter very deeply into the plan from a high level internally. 



Integral to the scheme is the tectonic refinement of the exposed materials used throughout. An engineered, exposed structural timber frame of glulam beams forms a deep waffle slab that sits atop a white brickwork plinth. All of the timber members were pre-cut for assembly on site, with the frame and fixings being left fully exposed internally. A focus on detail, and a deliberate honesty and celebration of stark, layered construction is employed throughout. Additional elements like bespoke handrails designed by the architect, and mirrored stainless steel sheeting internally, completes the scheme.

RECTORY LANE CEMETERY




	

	
	


RIBAJ MacEwen Award 2021 Shortlisted


The scheme takes on the design of four separate seating
areas within Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted. Designed by architects James Alder and Thom Brisco, the interventions form part of
the wider transformation and refurbishment of the neglected cemetery into an
active community space for the town.



The manufacture of the concrete benches themselves was
coordinated with Broadmead RCS in Sittingbourne, specialists in precast
concrete. The bench arrangements are made from only four forms, their varying
configuration of which, form the changes inherent to the configuration of each of
the separate seating areas. Compass Timber formed the 45mm thick Iroko timber
components of the seating. All of which were cut to radius, planed and
installed as both backrests and seating pads throughout the project. 



These are all elevated from the underlying concrete surface
and sit upon a brass plate frame that forms a complete demountable cassette. Brassmaster
made all of the brass framing, as well as the brass reading box of the scheme,
from 10mm thick brass sheet throughout.



The benches sit within concentric rings of granite setts,
that then interact with the surrounding landscaping of the wider project. The
benches are to be read as objects freely dispersed within the walkways,
gravestones and memorials within which they sit.



In a matching tone to what surrounds them, the benches are
formed from a simple, base set of circular geometries that do not unnecessarily
vie for attention within their historic setting. Set within the aims of the
wider cemetery refurbishment, these interventions seek to reform the
dilapidated cemetery into a communal landscape. To this end, the benches are
organised for both the gathering of small groups, and for individual
reflection.

TURNER HOUSE




	

	
	PLANNING PERMISSION SECURED 
This proposal outlines the building of a two storey, rear and side extension to enlarge the living spaces of an end of terrace, suburban home located in Beckenham, London.
The extension takes the width and mass of the existing two storey rear outrigger of the home (itself a small former extension), and mirrors this mass to the west of the corner plot to form the scope of the proposed extension as it approaches the site boundary. To the front façade the extension steps back from the existing façade to
preserve the primacy of the host building from the street.


In terms of the roofscape, the central ridge of the existing roof is extended outward to a point that then lowers at the same pitch as the extension’s new roofline, this extended hip continues down to the concealed gutter of the extension’s long side elevation. The pitched roof of the outrigger is retained, and then duplicated once more for the extension, creating a double ridged roofline. Care has been taken to ensure that the massing of the scheme elaborates upon and extends the language already present within the host building.


The garden facing elevation creates a gable end that obscures the double ridged form of the roof that lies behind it, creating a secondary primary façade to the property that faces the rear garden. Given the façade’s presence from the perspective of the neighbouring public path, care has been taken to design this symmetrical façade with rigour and a refined layering of tectonics.
