James Alder Architects is an award-winning architectural practice based between London and Copenhagen, working across the UK, as well as internationally, on the design and construction of artful buildings and spaces.

The studio maintains a meticulous interest in assembly and construction, and benefits from experience across a broad range of building scales and uses. The studio undertakes all RIBA project stages through to managed on-site construction and full contract administration.

Long-standing collaborators of the studio include Thom Brisco, Ameet Mistry, Hafsteinn Ævar Jóhannsson and Ingrid Kraftchenko.

James Alder studied architecture at the University of Nottingham, (UK) and the Royal Danish Academy (Denmark), completing his BArch (Hons.) and MA (cand.arch) prior to completing his Part III professional studies in architecture at London Metropolitan University (UK).

In addition, James has also completed a History & Theory of Architecture Master’s Degree from McGill University (Canada) as a recipient of the Clifford C.F. Wong Fellowship in 2010.

James founded his own architectural studio in 2019 after having worked for a number of high profile, award-winning studios in London, including Jamie Fobert Architects, Carmody Groarke and Sanchez Benton architects.

In addition to practice, James teaches architecture at the Welsh School of Architecture (UK) at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and has been an invited critic to numerous architectural schools across Europe.

James is a RIBA Chartered Architect and a registered member of the Architect’s Registration Board (ARB).
